Ways to Identify Real Pearls from Fake Ones

Pearls have a unique shape, color, shine, and silky texture that makes them seem expensive but accessible. This is why they are so popular. Genuine pearls are a sophisticated and classic choice for jewelry, but they can be hard to spot.

Examining a pearl’s surface can help you determine its authenticity; genuine pearls will have a few tiny bumps and irregularities that give them a special look. A real pearl will feel gritty when rubbed against your teeth, whereas a fake pearl will feel smooth.

A genuine pearl can be distinguished from imitations by its distinct surface, which is frequently uneven or rough. In comparison to other gemstones, they also have a more subdued luster.

Real pearls also have a slightly grainy feel when rubbed against the front teeth.

The weight of the pearl can also be evaluated; since genuine pearls are denser than fake ones, real pearls typically weigh more. The weight of real pearls varies according to their size and kind. They are typically light, weighing between 0.5 and 6 grams. More weight will be associated with larger pearls compared to smaller ones of the same kind.

Genuine pearls don’t have a magnetic quality. Pearls are made of organic materials that are not attracted to magnets and tiny crystals of calcium carbonate.

The authenticity of the pearl should also be verifiable using an X-ray machine by a qualified jeweler.

Finally, look at the drill hole. Because natural pearls are organic, they should have an uneven shape. From where it grew in the oyster shell, it may also have tiny ridges running along the inside wall.

You can tell if a pearl is real or fake with these quick tests.

Since direct sunlight can dry out and fade pearls, it is best to avoid storing them there. Rather, keep them somewhere cold and dark, away from heat and moisture. It is recommended to store them in a jewelry box or soft cloth pouch lined with satin or velvet.
