My own Experience in Selling Jewelries 

I also had experience selling jewelry more than thirty years ago, primarily in settings of yellow and white gold. The majority of the settings are in 14k yellow gold, or what we called standard. because when they say “14K only settings,” they typically mean 12K or less. For this reason, I always tell them that all of my jewelry is 14k standard.

Since I work in an office, most of my clients are my coworkers and their friends and family, so it was easy to sell back then. My two suppliers are a friend of mine who runs a pawnshop and a jewelry store.  They sold me my stocks, and I bought those from a pawnshop. To restore its original beauty, I plan to have it cleaned and additionally coated in gold. 

For those who prefer a custom design, I have a friend create it and provide me with their specifications, including the type of settings they like, the number of diamond carats, and the carat value of gold used in the settings. Typically, people who order custom designs prefer 14k gold standard; when they bring it to an appraiser, it is evaluated as 14k gold standard and has a higher appraisal value than other options.

I sell those in installments and pay for them with cash. Typically, 10 indicates that they must pay it on the 15th and 30th of each month (5 months) at payday.  If any are not sold, I can take them back to my friends’ pawnshop and exchange them for other stocks; at the time, Saudi and Singaporean gold were the most popular options, with prices ranging from 18 to 22k.Since they could wear the jewelry while they were still making payments for it, selling was simple back then.

The secret to this business is patience and hard work. Every weekend, I bring my stocks to a jeweler to have them cleaned before attaching the price tag. My family benefits from this business because it allowed me to send my kids to private schools for elementary, middle, and high school, until my oldest son completed college. We experienced culture shock when we first arrived in America, which made things difficult. This place has a very different way of life. We must begin the process anew. I’m trying this business again now, and I sincerely hope and pray that it works out.
